About Northwind

Studio

Sixteen designers, writers, and strategists in a converted print shop on King Street West — building brands and products with more spine than trend.

Philosophy

Northwind was founded on a simple irritation: most studios sell polish. We sell conviction.

A logo is not a brand. A deck is not a strategy. A beautiful interface that nobody trusts is just an expensive mistake. We exist because too many companies were being handed decoration when what they needed was a decision — about who they are, what they refuse to be, and how that shows up in every pixel, page, and product shipped under their name.

So we work slower at the start and faster at the end. Every project begins with an argument, not a mood board — a point of view we can defend in a boardroom and still believe in eighteen months later. Everything downstream is built to carry that argument without apology.

“We don't design what's expected.
We design what's inevitable.”— The Northwind Studio

How We Work

Four moves, in order.

01 — Listen

Listen

We spend the first week asking questions most studios skip: who are you when the market isn't watching? What would you rather lose — revenue or reputation? The brief we write ourselves is usually sharper than the one we're handed.

02 — Distill

Distill

Every brand is hiding a single sentence. We find it, test it against the business, and refuse to move forward until it's true and defensible — not just clever.

03 — Build

Build

Identity, product, and interface are designed in the same room, at the same time, by people who talk to each other. Nothing is handed off in the dark.

04 — Refine

Refine

We ship, then we watch. Real usage tells us more than a fourth round of internal review ever could — so we build room for it into every timeline.

The People

A small studio, on purpose.

Northwind stays deliberately small — sixteen people, no account managers, no layers between you and the person actually making the decisions. Every project is led end-to-end by a founding partner.

Mira Kessler

Founding Partner, Brand Strategy

Fourteen years building positioning for challenger brands before co-founding Northwind in 2018.

Adebayo Osei

Founding Partner, Product Design

Leads every product and interface engagement personally; previously shaped design systems at two Toronto scale-ups.

Junko Wren

Creative Director

Sets the visual language for every identity Northwind ships, from wordmark to wayfinding.

Theo Marchetti

Head of Motion & Interaction

Builds the movement and micro-interaction layer that makes Northwind's work feel inevitable, not just designed.

What We Hold To

Craft Over Trend

We'd rather build something that ages well than something that peaks this quarter.

Substance Over Spectacle

If a design choice can't defend itself in a business conversation, it doesn't ship.

Clarity Is Confidence

The clearest brand in the room usually wins the room. We chase clarity first.

Built To Last

Every system we hand over is documented and owned by you — no dependency on us to keep it working.
